In
October, Grandstar Cargo had successfully accomplished the transportation of 5
pieces 28.5ton/pc heavy cargo from Frankfurt to Shanghai, using a
B747-400F.
The
commodity name is wind turbine gear box, with the dimension of 269cm x
258cm x 255cm (L x W x H) per piece. They are the
main components of a demonstration project for World Expo 2010 Shanghai China.
Generally,
heavy cargo should be loaded through nose door. For this transportation by
Grandstar Cargo, only side cargo door can be used due to the height of the cargo
exceeds the nose cargo door height restriction of B744F. In this case, the Power
Drive Unit beside the side cargo door cannot move the cargo if the weight does
not spread equally on the 20 foot pallet. Grandstar Cargo carefully worked out
the loading and unloading procedures, closely cooperated with both airports and
ground handling partners, and finely spread the weight onto the 20 foot pallet
by using wooden spreaders within limited operation hours.
"This
is a very difficult transportation as it is the first time in Grandstar Cargo
history to handle heavy cargo through the side cargo door due to cargo height
restriction. And also it is precious experience for every involved party. The
whole loading and unloading process were performed perfectly."
said Mr. J.D. Cha, senior vice president of commercial division.
Mr.
Lee Kwang Sa, president and CEO of Grandstar Cargo, added "We are delighted that
Grandstar Cargo is capable of this difficult and complicated transportation
safely and timely. With more experience for special cargo, Grandstar Cargo will
continue to offer various perfect solutions to customers in order to meet their
multiple needs."
